The Kobos are here!

On New Year's Day a group of volunteers met at the Library. We were there to help the Chair of the Library Society, Pearl Roberts, to draw the winners of our e-lottery. The two winners would be the first to borrow our e-readers.
First out of the jar were Lynne Scott and Kim Mooney. Later, we learned that they had each been lucky enough to receive an e-reader for Christmas, and two more names were drawn.
Congratulations Chris Benger and Isabel Kerr, you are the two winners.

The Kobos are coming!
The rumours you hear are absolutely true. Galiano Island Community Library is taking a tentative step into the e-future, testing our patrons' enthusiasm for books that have no pages and can be carried twelve at a time in the hip pocket.
Our pilot project will be launched on January 1st, with just two Kobo e-readers pre-loaded with six bestsellers and six classics. Each e-reader can be borrowed for three weeks, free of charge, like any other item on our shelves. In six months' time we'll review the response.
Because of their relatively high value and potential breakability different lending procedures will apply to the Kobo twins. If you have visited the library recently you may have heard the story and taken part in the e-lottery that will identify the first two lucky borrowers.

Galiano Gets A New Library!
20th November, 2011
On November 19, voters passed a referendum supporting plans for a new library on the site of Galiano Community School. Preliminary results are YES 482, No 446.
Thank you to all those who went to the polls, considered the
benefits, and supported our vision of a welcoming public space for
everyone to enjoy.
The successful referendum means Galiano will receive a $400,000
government grant, on top of the $150,000 already contributed by our
generous donors. We will continue to look for ways to reduce costs
through donated materials and services, ongoing fundraising and careful
project management.
We look forward to working with you to build a lasting legacy for
our
community!

About this website
As always, we thank the Public Library Services Branch of the BC Ministry of Education for the gift of this website. Professionals at the branch keep it operating, while volunteers at the Library fill the pages as best we can.
Once a month, or thereabouts, we'll be updating the site, mainly to let you know what new books, videos etc. have been added to our collections. The big differences are therefore at the New on the Shelves and Children's Corner pages.
Other parts of the site are likely to be updated at any time, as necessary. For example, the Front Page News section, above.
We would appreciate your comments on this site as it develops, and welcome suggestions for improvement. You'll find addresses and phone numbers at the foot of the "Contact the Library" page.
